Data-base reliability: a case study

The author describes the process used to improve the quality of PRACA (Problem Reporting and Corrective Action) data at the Kennedy Space Center and the impact of data changes on the system users, using one data element (work area code) as the basis of the study. It is concluded that the implementation of data dictionary edits were extremely helpful in improving the quality and consistency of data in the database. Implementation of edit checks can also cause problems, including a loss of detail in the data and misunderstanding of data. The problems can be successfully countered with appropriate training and by involving users in the selection of legal values.<
