Heat pipe local cooling system applied for 145 kV transmission lines in Copenhagen

In connection with the planned installation of a 145 kV power transmission system in Copenhagen, crossings with the distribution piping of regional centralized heating systems were expected to give rise to numerous hot spots, and consequently measures to cope with thermal interference became necessary. Various possible countermeasures were considered, and as a result of these studies, an anti-thermal interference system, consisting of the installation at each of approximately 50 hot spots of several long heat pipes centered at the crossing point and running along the cable, was adopted. All the required installation work for the system was completed in 1988, and the system was still operating satisfactorily in 1991. This system involves no moving parts, is maintenance-free, and may be expected to see increasingly wider application in the future.<
