Status and recent advances in quantum cascade lasers

The state-of-the-art performance of InP- and GaAs-based quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) is reviewed and compared. The main issues related with the key physical phenomena controlling the QCL operation and some relevant technological aspects are also addressed.
