Estuary parameter measurements and data handling - A new approach using underwater sound telemetry

A multiple-parameter measurement and data acquisition system for synoptic data collection over shallow water areas is described. This system will make use of low-cost remote sensor/telemetry modules which relay data to intermediate shore-based stations by underwater sound telemetry. The remote modules will initiate multiple-parameter measurements on command from the shore stations. After reception of the telemetered acoustic signals at each shore station, the data from the shore stations are relayed to a central collection point. The implementation of this design concept will provide synoptic measurements over sectors of 1 to 2 miles in radius around each shore station for a period from 6 to 12 months, thus providing information at a very low cost per data point.
