Total backscatter from conducting rectangular corrugations

Corrugations can completely convert specular reflection from a conducting surface to backscatter. With a rectangular groove surface profile this is possible for either transverse electric (TE) or transverse magnetic (TM) polarization, or for both simultaneously. Numerical and experimental results demonstrating this for a surface designed for plane-wave incidence at
50\deg
from the normal are shown. Applications to radar target design and multipath interference reduction are proposed.
