Data catalogs for archive systems

The authors define the components of a catalog system, stressing the key role that retrieval methodology plays in determining the amount and quality of catalog data required as well as determining the physical storage location of the data. The use of a library model provides a framework as well as lessons learned for those designing catalog systems of the future. How standard objects can be used to define and compose catalog data objects is shown. It is made clear that the development and use of standards in metadata preparation can increase the utility and lower the cost of catalog systems.<
