Optical breakdown in gases of medium ionization potential

Breakdown threshold with ruby laser excitation has been determined for the gases Cl
2
, Br
2
, I
2
, ICl, NO, NO
2
, Hg, and C
6
H
6
, using argon as a reference. Our results indicate that threshold depends mainly on the ionization potential and that effects due to absorption in the visible region are secondary.
