On the effect of molecular chlorine on the CO2laser

Vibrationally excited Cl
2
was found to strongly decrease the gain in the CO
2
laser amplifier whereas an increase in gain was produced by vibrationally unexcited Cl
2
. The results are interpreted in terms of the near resonant V-V energy transfer between Cl
2
and the ν
2
mode of CO
2
.
