Gaussian beams are fundamentally different from free-space modes

Either from physical considerations or from exact calculations it is found that a Gaussian beam is grossly different from any free-space mode. In fact, each mode of free space is a standing wave and it is the superposition of two or more of them that approaches the configuration of a through-flowing Gaussian beam.
