Laser-produced shocks and their relation to material damage

This paper presents data on the shock pressure transmitted to metallic targets and to single crystal potassium chloride targets by CO
2
TEA laser pulses with microsecond and submicrosecond durations. Scaling relations are established for the effect of variable laser power density and ambient air pressure. The relation of the shock pressure to catastrophic mechanical damage in the potassium chloride is described.
