Understanding Latency and QoE in Social XR

The Social eXtended Reality (Social XR) is conceived as an immersive shared space, where users can interact with others. Thus, Social XR requires an immersive interactive communication. However, the technical aspects of communication that can affect the Quality of Experience (QoE) have not been fully explored, particularly in relation with latency. Although latency has been extensively studied in classical communication systems, its effect on the user experience in Social XR communications requires further study. In this work, we propose a shared communication framework to identify the sources of the delay in various use cases in Social XR and their different implications on the QoE. Additionally, we present a QoE model based on ITU recommendations, enabling the prediction of quality level from the measured perception and acceptance delay values.
