Position of modern peer-to-peer systems in the distributed systems architecture

Recently, the hottest development in the area of distributed computing is the appearance of peer-to-peer systems, employing a direct communication and free resources on desktop computers. We describe peer-to-peer systems, compare the definitions of distributed systems with those of peer-to-peer systems and stress the characteristic aspects.
