Status and prospects for perpendicular magnetic recording

Summary form only given. In this paper, recent progress on perpendicular recording is presented and is used to project the future prospects for the technology. Data from spin stand recording experiments indicate that perpendicular recording has high density potential. Further optimization of the alloy media is expected to lead to improved thermal stability and improved SNR performance. Alternatively, Co/Pd type multilayer media may be used.
