Improved Dynamic Performance of PMSG Wind Energy Based on Controller Using Optimization Techniques

With the advance of optimization techniques, new control strategies of the permanent magnet synchronous generator in direct-drive wind power system have increasingly employed for quick-response enhancement. This conference paper proposes the implementation of the whale optimization algorithm and ant lion optimizer for parameter tuning of the proportional-integral controllers for the permanent magnet synchronous generator based wind energy conversion system. At the same time, the two optimization techniques apply on the machine side converter and the grid side converter which controlled the permanent magnet synchronous generator operation. The new robust controller is able to improve the maximum power point tracking and the low voltage ride-through capability when compared with the classical proportional-integral controller. A comparative study has been performed between two optimization techniques and the conventional proportional-integral controller under two different conditions such as wind speed step and three phase symmetrical faults. The simulation results have shown the validation and fast-response proposed control strategies for high-quality power generation applications.
