Receiver Detection Methods on Molecular Communications

Diffusion-based molecular communication (DBMC) is a system in which molecules carrying information sent from the transmitter are transported to the receiver by diffusion in a fluid medium. In this system, it is important to design low complexity and high performance receiver detection methods due to high inter-symbol interference (ISI) and limited processing capacity of nanomachines. In the DBMC, the variance of the observation noise of the signal received to the receiver is dependent on the signal sent from the transmitter. In this study, the bit error rate (BER) performance of Viterbi algorithm in molecular communication was examined considering the signal dependence of observation noise variance and compared with Viterbi algorithm proposed in the literature. In addition, the BER performance of Wiener and Kalman filters, which have lower computational complexity than Viterbi algorithm, are investigated and compared with adaptive threshold detection (ATD) and fixed threshold detection (FTD) receiver methods.
