Sensitivity Enhancement for Asymmetric Split Ring Resonators in a Vertical Coupling Geometry

We present a new concept to enhance the sensitivity of asymmetric split ring resonators towards micromechanical modulation or sensing related tuning of the resonance. By changing the gap geometry to a vertical configuration, field concentration can be better localized at the gap between the split resonator structures gaps. Resonances can be shift to lower frequencies and attain a significantly enhanced tunability range while retaining good Q-factor.
