Coexistance issues concerning 4g and mmwave 5G antennas for mobile terminals

This paper investigates methods to integrate mmWave 5G antennas with existing microwave 4G MIMO antenna configuration for mobile terminals with metallic chassis. The study begins with first assessing the performance degradation of 4G IFAs constituting a 4 × 4 MIMO configuration in the presence of mmWave 5G antenna elements implemented in close proximity at various locations. It is ascertained that surface mounting the 5G antenna elements on the 4G IFA at the current null point results optimal performance. A conceptual design of thirty-two 5G antenna elements and four 4G IFAs for present day smartphones is proposed.
