Even though it is only one satellite series—made up of a total of eight satellites as of 2016—the Landsat series has proven to be one of the most interesting cases for understanding data sharing policies. Over its 45-year history, the program has transitioned from a free and open policy, to full privatization and commercial sales, to marginal cost pricing, and eventually back to free and open provision.
