Mobile Broadband: Next Generation Mobile Networks

The mobile broadband is becoming reality with 4G mobile networks, which include LTE‐Advanced and Mobile WiMAX 2.0. This chapter covers LTE‐Advanced regarding the standardization in access and core networks, including System Architecture Evolution (SAE), carrier aggregation in the radio access part, home eNodeB and Self‐Optimizing Networks (SON). Further, it describes Mobile WiMAX 2.0 architecture and radio access network. Also, the chapter covers Fixed‐Mobile Convergence (FMC) and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) in NGN environments with its functional entities. It also includes emerging mobile services such as mobile TV and location‐based services. However, in mobile environments this goes along with allocation of more spectrum and mechanisms for even higher spectral efficiency to have higher available bitrates in the future, so chapter ends with spectrum management and business aspects for mobile broadband.
