An experimental study of winding fault induced slot harmonic effects in the cage rotor induction machine stator current

This study examines the stator current spectral signature of stator winding fault in experiments undertaken on an industrial low power cage rotor induction machine. It is shown that the existence of stator fault can give rise to prominent spectral signature at slot harmonic frequencies in a motor design that does not produce slot harmonic current components under healthy operating conditions. The observed spectral changes are shown in experiments to have the potential to enable the recognition of winding fault presence in the examined motor design during both grid supplied and inverter-fed operation.
