Actual and Future Developments of Nanocrystalline Magnetic Materials for Common Mode Chokes and Transformers

Inductive Components with nanocrystalline tape wound cores (e.g. VITROPERM(r) 500) offer superior properties for several applications. On the one side for common mode chokes a high permeability and the weak decrease of mu(f) allow at high frequencies an excellent HF attenuation in a rather small design. On the other side for transformers a high saturation flux density Bs and a small hysteresis loss give very good conditions for high efficiency in the medium frequency range. Furthermore they are also a great material for cut cores because of their low magnetostriction and mechanical stability. In future the advantages of nanocrystalline materials will be available for low effective permeability too. This will enable the use in applications like storage chokes, storage transformers, etc., including high DC tolerance.
