Abstract:
The author argues that research in engineering design is a justified description of a sector of engineering research. Its distinguishing features are that the research programmes are largely initiated in response to, or inspired by, the needs of designers and manufacturers, to enable them to utilise the latest technology and scientific knowledge in advanced competitive designs. He shows that the outcome from 'research in design' projects, whether short-term or long-term, should not be restricted to new knowledge, published in scientific or technical journals, but should be communicated using information technology techniques to the designers as rapidly as possible.<>
