Abstract:

The practice exercise presented here is part of a laboratory course, comprising also other automation topics, to introduce engineering students to the digital substation concept and standards. This hands-on exercise of automation in power system protection via Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED), is based on generic object-oriented substation events (GOOSE) protocol, Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) and it is focused on information mapping based on the IEC61850 standard. The power system simulated in a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) and libIEC61850 is used for programming information exchange between client and server. The students carry out tasks such as information exchange based on GOOSE and MMS protocol for monitoring, control, and protection purposes, and faults simulation. Moreover, the student is allowed to access the virtual machine (VM) remotely through a web browser for experimenting.
