Efficiency of Two Different Types of Upper Bonded Retainers

A retainer is an orthodontic appliance that fixes teeth in the correct position, preventing them from moving. Those structures can be removable and non-removable, visible or completely invisible. The aim of this study was to compare the behavior and the relapse rate of two different types of upper canine-to-canine bonded retainers systems over a period of one year. A retrospective study was conducted on 150 patients aged 11–15 years, for which 2 types of fixed retainers -Splinx™ retainer and Ortho FlexTech® retainer - were used during the retention phase on the upper arch. The data from the study was analysed using IBM SPSS 27.0, through descriptive statistics. In our study Ortho Flextech Lingual Retention System group behaved approximately the same to the Splinx™ retainer group. It should be noted that no deformation was seen and also fewer relapses were reported for Ortho Flextech® Lingual Retention System Group. The relapse installation and its severity are directly proportional to the moment of total detachment, deformation and fracture of the retainer for the both groups.
