Sheath Potential Induced Failure Modes and Influencing Factors of Bonded Cable System

The failure of power cables leads to significant disruption in the electricity transmission and distribution system. The metallic sheath of single core cable is generally not grounded at more than one point in bonded systems. In certain cases, when the bonding technique is not adopted properly, dielectric and subsequent thermal failure of the cable systems may occur. The induced sheath potential and its effects in a 66kV cable system is studied using a PSCAD model. The sheath potential associated with switching operations in a 33kV system is studied, also using a PSCAD model.
