Simulating Labuan Bajo Indonesia Cable Based Tsunameter (INA-CBT) Landing Station Network through the Development of IPFIX-based Traffic Generator Application

In a complex modern technology, a single application may include multiple technologies with various transport mechanisms. Delivering approaches to simulate these mechanisms, traffic generators are introduced to mimic real congestion in a measurable environment. Ensuring system reliability, the third-generation INA-CBT (Indonesia Cable-Based Tsunameter) infrastructure is equipped with an IPFIX-based monitoring system that was installed in the Landing Station (LS) and Read Down Station (RDS) areas. Hence, in this paper, we introduce our preliminary work on developing IP Flow Information Export (IPFIX) protocol-based traffic generator tools. Combined with our INA-CBT system testbed, this application development aims at providing a deep-through analysis of traffic behavior in the INA-CBT’s LS. We developed three python-based subsystem modules, i.e., the data reader, data parser, and data receiver modules. In conclusion, from the test results, the error rate percentage reproduced by the traffic generator tools compared with the real LS traffic reached almost 16.265% and 28.649% for Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) data, respectively. However, compared to the real traffic pattern, the application already has the ability to impersonate TCP and UDP type traffic for each flow time sequence in an acceptable error rate range (<30%).
