Particle Resolved Direct Numerical Simulations of Spouted Bed

Spouting condition in a rectangular packed bed is investigated by particle resolved direct numerical simulations and experiments. Interactions between fluid and particles are modeled by body force type Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) and interactions between particles and particles and wall interactions are modeled using Discrete Element Method (DEM). Jet velocity is increased in steps in both simulation and experiment until a coherent and stable jet is formed. After obtaining this condition some of the characteristics of spouted bed are investigated. Because of the associated computational cost, the fluid grid is not refined beyond eight grids per particle diameter which enables only qualitative comparison between experiment and simulation. Some of the characteristics of spouted bed like minimum spouting velocity, void variations, spout shape and circulation patterns are studied in this paper.
