Performance Improvement of Linear Tubular Permanent Magnet Actuator with Pole Shoe for Vehicle Suspension System

This paper presents the design and analysis of a linear tubular permanent magnet actuator (LTPMA) for vehicle suspension system. A pole shoe is employed to improve the thrust force and reduce thrust force ripples. Axial permanent magnet pattern with the moving coil having pole shoes on the mover core provides additional stability and safety by performing active roll and pitch control during cornering and braking. Parametric sweep optimization is used to optimize the coil height and stator core. The performance of the proposed LTPMA is analysed by using both NdFeB and ferrite magnets. The analysis reveals that with pole shoe the thrust force of the proposed LTPMA is 50% more than the thrust force without pole shoe (i.e. conventional design).
