Analysis of mmWave 77 GHz Inter-vehicular Radar System

In this work, the concept of inter-vehicular collision avoidance system in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency range is analysed using the principle of obstacle detection and positioning. Indeed, the obstacle detection system performance depends on its RADAR Cross Section (RCS), which by its value affects the system Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). Small variations in distance or angles of incidence of the radar waves generate large variations of the RCS values which can significantly degrade the performance of the system. According to this problem and in order to compensate for variations in the RCS, a module with near constant RCS values as a function of the incoming signal angle of incidence was designed. Algorithms for estimating the target angle have been implemented to observe the angular errors of such a system with acceptable error tolerance of approximately 1° in the practical case of inter-vehicle radar systems for collision detection and avoidance.
