A Wireless Livestock Tracking System Based on Real-time Internet of Things for Theft Prevention

The Internet of Things (IoT) requires interconnected sensor nodes and supporting network communication. Various applications can be developed based on this infrastructure. This study proposes a livestock theft prevention system by wireless object tracking based on the IoT. In wireless sensor networks, various studies have shown that the existing livestock tracking devices do not update the live location of livestock due to the constraints of wireless communication. This study interconnects existing devices to report livestock positions in real-time. Low power wide area network (LPWAN) protocol for IoT provides the data-link layer with long-range, low power, and low bit rate properties. Long Range (LoRa) communication can be used to link the end-units, the application servers, and the farm owners, towards a real-time awareness of the livestock situation. Combining the LoRa architecture and the Long-Range WAN protocol to provide long-range connectivity, this paper develops a livestock theft prevention system. The proposed system allows real-time livestock tracking, via data centers and application servers, from mobile devices. The simulation and experiment validated the proposed method. Further study of this research is discussed.
