Design of Microstrip Patch Antenna for the Detection of Malignant Tumor

Breast cancer is one of the most well-known and life-threatening diseases among women. The excess growth of abnormal cells in the breast tissue in multistage process is known as breast cancer. To detect cancer tissue early diagnosis is important. But the normal methods used for detection of breast tumor have certain limits. So, microwave imaging (MWI) techniques were utilized. Due to its non-destructive testing, harmless and non-ionizing radiation nature microwave imaging (MWI) method is good for breast cancer detection. In this paper, a Rectangular Patch Microstrip Antenna (RMSA) of 2.45 GHz was designed and the results were analyzed for breast cancer detection. Insect feed is used for enhancement of the impedance matching. FR-4(lossy) material is used in the antenna design. For early detection gain, directivity, Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR), magnetic field, electric field and bandwidth of a breast phantom without tumor and with tumor have been observed by simulating using Computer Simulation Technology Microwave Studio (CST-MWS). The VSWR<2 bandwidth is 70 MHz which is approximately 2.8% and the antenna resonates at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. These results show that the proposed Rectangular Patch Microstrip Antenna is able to detect the presence of breast tumor with better characteristics than the other existing designs available in the literature.
