Poster: Design of AI-Powered Augmented Reality Games for Autistic Children

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) emerges as a significant medical challenge. It is highly costly to deliver effective treatment to children with ASD, especially the low-functioning ones. This study aims to develop a low-cost, portable, and engaging gaming system based on emerging technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) to efficiently deploy customized training based on the needs of ASD children through HoloLens. We first present the design of the AR-based gaming system and then describe two types of therapy most commonly used in Autism clinical practice to enhance patients’ attentiveness and imagination. Finally, we identify a set of challenges faced to develop games that are lightweight, user-friendly, intelligent, customized, encouraging, high-responsive, and secure.
