Evaluation of Flux-barrier Stator in five-phase PMSMs for Electric Aircraft Traction

Flux barriers in the stator increase the amplitude of the air-gap field working harmonic in FSCW three phase permanent magnet machines and produce a higher torque than comparable machines with conventional stators. In this paper, we analyze five-phase machines with stator flux barriers and compare them to machines with conventional stators using analytic methods and finite element analysis. The influence of the width of the flux barrier is also discussed and a comparison to a three-phase machine is presented.
