A High-performance Digital Automatic Voltage Regulator for Brushless Wound Excited Synchronous Generator On-Vehicle and Its implementation

Automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is designed to keep the terminal voltage of the generator constant, regardless of all disturbances. This paper presents a novel digital AVR for a new kind of brushless wound excited synchronous generator (BLWSG) on vehicle. Working principle of BLWSG is firstly introduced, regulating process of excited current is then addressed. Based on description above, a digital AVR is designed. Its control system is designed including its digital control algorithms. A prototype is manufactured using dsPIC30F4011 microprocessor. Steady-state and dynamic performances, self-excited process and effectiveness of constant voltage keeping are evaluated. Experimental results demonstrate excellent performance of the proposed AVR.
