Numerical simulation of protection method for buried pipelines crossing joints under uncoordinated deformation

Because of the buried pipelines are likely to be failure when they are subjected to offset at the interface of two blocks, two protection methods (steel casing and soft casing) are proposed to reduce the failure of buried pipelines crossing the construction joints of concrete base. Then, the numerical simulation was carried to study the deformation and stress of the buried pipeline subjected to the joint movement, as well as the effect of two pipe protection methods on reduce pipe failure. The results reveal that the maximum tensile and compression stress of the pipeline are distributed at the joint, and the compressive stress is obviously larger, which will induce the bending failure. Furthermore, the maximum tensile and compressive stress of the pipe increase linearly with the increase of joint movement. The stress of pipe around the pipe is nonuniform, and it is larger at the top and bottom of pipe. The stress of the pipelines reduced significantly with the application of two pipe protection methods, and the effect of steel casing method is better to reduce the pipe failure at the joint.
