Optimization of CU Partition Based on Texture Degree in H.266/VVC

H.266/VVC, a new generation of video coding standard, has achieved great performance improvement compared with the previous generation of coding standard, but the Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO) process leads to the increase of intra coding time. In order to reduce the complexity of H.266/VVC, this paper proposes a Coding Unit (CU) early termination segmentation algorithm based on Laplacian operator. The algorithm uses the convolution of the original pixel luminance value and Laplacian operator to obtain the texture degree of each pixel, and calculates the sum of the texture degrees of three specific size of CUs. Among them, the three sizes of CUs correspond to three different thresholds respectively. While the texture degree of the current CU is less than or equal to the threshold corresponding to the CU size, it will be determined as a flat region and will not continue to split downward, which will save the encoding time. Finally, the performance of the algorithm is tested under the common test conditions recommended by JVET. The experimental results show that the algorithm is more effective for high-definition (HD) videos can reduce the encoding time by about 38.64

on average and 36.88% for HD videos under the all intra configuration. For HD videos the change of Y, U and V components of this model are 0.990%, 0.263% and 0%.
