Standalone portable electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system predicts lung function indicators for potential home-based lung disease screening and monitoring

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive biomedical imaging modality that has several clinical applications namely for human lungs. Yet, its relationship with gold standard lung diagnostic tools including spirometry is not available. Furthermore, in-depth diagnostic screening at home remains challenging, partly due to the lack of portable imaging devices. In this study, we implemented a portable EIT system, and demonstrated the feasibility of predicting spirometry indicators in both healthy subjects and lung disease patients using a standalone EIT system, signifying home-based lung disease screening and monitoring is possible.
