Using Motionally Induced Electric Fields to measure Water Currents

This paper describes an autonomous profiling float that measures water currents, to within a few centimeters per second, by using the electric fields created as water moves through the earth’s magnetic field. The resulting technique has been successfully used in many environments, including measuring water currents during major storms.
