Semiconductor optical fiber: on-chip optoelectronics in fiber form

Semiconductor optical fiber marry two of the most important technological advancements over the past 50 years: chip-based electronics and fiber-based photonics. This paper highlights the evolution of such fibers from the enabling materials science, through their engineered optimization, to present and future devices.
