Safety of Perception Systems in Vehicles of High-Level Motion Automation

The paper presents a concept for evaluating the Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF) for automotive perception systems. The SOTIF standard covers aspects related to some abnormal behavior specified for the system due to performance limitation or insufficient robustness of the system function with respect to sensor input variations or various environmental conditions. The presented concept includes partitioning of system failures, modeling hazardous events, analysis of traffic statistics, and definition of known unsafe test scenarios. An important element of the methodology described in the paper is qualitative and quantitative data analysis that helps define the safety of the system in a measurable way.
