Sparse Peripheral Counter-vection Flow Visualization with Reverse Optical Flow for VR Sickness Reduction

Sickness is one of major obstacles in the wider adoption of virtual reality. Vection is attributed as the main cause, leading to sensory mismatch between the visual and vestibular senses. One possible measure to reduce the extent of such VR sickness is provide low res-olution peripheral “countervection” visualization as was suggested by [7]. In this poster, we present an extension/improvement to this work, where the countervection flow visualization is based on re-verse optical flow of the features in the scene rather than a projection of a moving strip patterns. We evaluated our extension and its effect in a pilot comparative experiment against the original countervection visualization method (simulated), and obtained positive results.
