Optimized Shelter Accommodation in Odisha

Odisha, an eastern state in India facing the Bay of Bengal is extremely vulnerable to cyclones. Its coast witnesses devastating cyclones which severely disrupts the communities' livelihood. Evacuation of the population pre-disaster is done by the government body. The people are referred to as Internally Displaced People as they relocate temporarily to shelters within the state. Provisions for these shelters are provided by the government and are funded by various organizations. However, some of Odisha's disaster preparedness doesn't meet the universal minimum standards as well as live up to what the media portrays. Space inadequacy in each shelter seems to be a dire issue. This creates an uncomfortable situation during a difficult time. Other problems that arise due to this are use of latrines, food and other provisions supplied. With a view of having a personal space for each person in a shelter during a disaster, we leverage technology for an optimized shelter allocation web application.
