Wind Direction Retrieval of Ocean/Desert With Gaofen-3 Data

Wind direction observation is one of the quite important applications of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) in earth remote sensing. Wind direction indicates the earth surface change trend and can be used in many fields such as wind power generation. Except for ocean wind direction, which is widely studied, the desert wind direction is considered as the focused issue in the paper. The ocean wind direction can be retrieved from the SAR image based on the ocean wind-induced streaks. Moreover, the similar wind-induced streaks in the desert data are also investigated and exploited for desert wind direction retrieval using estimation methods in both the spectral domain and spatial domain. Based on the Gaofen-3 (GF3) stripmap data, this paper completed the comparison of the two methods, verified the possibility and feasibility of the desert wind direction retrieval in the experiment, and obtained reasonable results.
