Traffic information-based eco-driving for plug-in electric vehicles: A hierarchical control strategy

The development of an intelligent transportation system provides great opportunities for improving the driving performance of electrified vehicles. For example, eco-driving can be achieved by using road and traffic information. For plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), eco-driving control involves two essential problems, including speed planning and energy management. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical control strategy to investigate the impact of traffic light numbers and location arrangement on the driving performance of a PHEV. In the upper control layer, to avoid waiting at the intersections, the reference driving velocity is calculated by utilizing the traffic light states information. Then the power allocation is optimized in the lower control layer by a predictive equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS).
