Effect of Waste Cooking Oil Biodiesel on Marine Diesel Engine Performance, Emissions and Combustion Characteristics

The consumption rise and environmental impact of diesel fuel lead to the exploration of alternative fuels. This work investigated the effects of blending waste cooking oil biodiesel with diesel on marine diesel engine performance, combustion characteristics and emissions compared to diesel. The rapid combustion of biodiesel reduces the effective thermal efficiency (BTE) and results in a slight increase in fuel consumption rate (BSFC). The levels of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and soot in the gaseous pollutants reduces when blending biodiesel. However, the high combustion temperature and oxygen content in the cylinder increased nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions. Diesel fuel and all blends exhibit nearly the same value of cylinder peak pressure. Waste cooking oil biodiesel blended can be considered good alternatives for fuels in diesel engines due to their improvements in performance parameters, combustion characteristics as well as emissions reduction.
