Energy Storage Planning alongside Renewable and Gas Units for Carbon Goals

With the low-carbon transition of the power system, the penetration rate of renewables in the power system will continue to increase. The increase in the penetration rate of renewables will bring about the insufficiency of system flexibility resources. Compared with traditional coal-fired power units, gas units are more flexible in startup and shutdown, with lower carbon emissions. Therefore, in the process of transitioning to a high-proportion renewables system in future power systems, gas units should be considered to solve the problem of uncertainty of renewables output. In addition, energy storage serving as another major source of flexibility resources in the system will also play a major role in the system with a high proportion of renewables. This paper proposes a collaborative generation expansion planning model to decide the investment of wind power, gas units, and energy storage.
