Design of H∞ Robust Controllers for Wind Turbines Based on DFIG

This paper describes the design and implementation of Hinfinity robust controllers for wind turbines using a Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). Aspects of wind turbine modeling and robust control theoretical principles that ensure high performances under the existence of uncertainties model are presented. Although nonlinear models characterize wind turbines, for design the robust controller linearized models are used, depending on the operating point. Simulation results for closed loop systems obtained with H infinity robust controllers and optimized PID controllers are presented. In order to achieve high performances, the generator speed and pitch angle of the turbine are controlled. Comparative results of simulations, realized in Matlab are presented and show that the performance obtained with H infinity controllers is better than that obtained with PID controllers.
