Ultra-high Dose Rate Pulsed X-ray Source Monitoring Based On Radioluminescent N-doped Optical Fiber

We investigate the potential of exploiting the radioluminescence (RIL) of a N-doped optical fiber to monitor the very high dose rate of pulsed X-ray sources. Previous studies already shown its interesting radiation response under steady state X-ray and proton beams. Dedicated experimental campaigns have been performed at ELSA and ASTERIX facilities from CEA to measure its RIL when exposed to µs or ns duration X-ray pulses associated with MGy(SiO
2
)/s and GGy/s dose rates, respectively. In both cases, the RIL intensities are directly correlated to the dose rates delivered by the facility as for low-dose rates measurements done with 40 keV steady state X-rays. A very interesting result is that the RIL dose rate dependence show a linear tendency over all the measured RIE ranges between 10
⁻²
Gy(SiO
2
)/s and a few 10
⁹
Gy(SiO
2
)/s, showing that this class of radiation monitors can be used in a large variety of facilities for beam monitoring.
