Application of the Multispectral Light Source for the Diagnostics of Skin Pathologies

This paper considers the application of a specially designed wavelength-controlled light source used in the implementation of a new unique method of multispectral image processing of skin lesions. Design features of this source have been described, namely the diametrical arrangement of LEDs. Experimental setup has been considered, on which experiments at different wavelengths were carried out to study reflections from skin areas with pathologies caused by lack of blood supply, benign lesions and burns. For this purpose, images of the studied skin areas were taken with a television camera while illuminating them at different wavelengths in the selected range. Then obtained images were subjected to additional digital processing using MATLAB environment with Image Processing Toolbox. This processing includes the application of histogram equalization to expand the dynamic range of brightness levels of the images under study. In addition, to eliminate distortions caused by unevenness of the studied surface and the presence of shadow illumination, the median filtering of images has been chosen. Intensity distribution plots for a series of images obtained in the experiments for a skin area with a lesion and a burn have been studied. A decrease in the degree of radiation absorption by skin areas without pathologies with decreasing wavelength has been registered.
