Generalized Analysis and Evaluation of Switched Inductor PWM-based Lithium-ion Battery Cell Balancing

This paper presents an analysis and evaluation of a non-dissipative lithium-ion battery balancing technique based on a switched-inductor topology. The switched-inductor topology transfers the charge between series-connected battery cells to achieve balanced condition. The principle of operation of the balancing technique is first reviewed and then, detailed DC analysis and speed of balancing, among others, are presented together with operation insights. A set of experimental results are obtained from a laboratory experimental prototype to evaluate the accuracy of the presented analysis and insights.
